Remote consultative work, mentorship, new podcast
We’ve been posting more mastheads to Applied Draft. Take a look!
And today, a big announcement: we’re the latest guest on the Unofficial Shopify Podcast, talking about all things store design & consulting. Tune in!
This week, for paid members
- We held our monthly office hours, talking about all sorts of interesting challenges with our members’ businesses. It’s one of the easiest & cheapest ways to get access to ask me stuff every month!
- This week’s paid lesson discusses the remote consultative challenges for stores in 2022. What happens when stores own their own warehouse & office, and you’re called in to tell them what to do?
- Our design of the week is all about the wildest CTA target we’ve ever seen. It goes off store. And it’s for good reason. The mind boggles.
- And finally, our fortnightly teardown is for N95 retailer Bonafide Masks. Bask in its graphic design excellence.

- When I first started out in the industry, I wrote Cadence & Slang in order to get a job. I was working at Photoshop chop shops, bugfixing for IE6 all day, and wondering when I would get a seat at the table, dictating strategy & talking to real people. Apprenticeship for UX never existed; my road into my career was sloppy, full of potholes, and to this day I wish that there had been a better way for me to learn the ropes. Along came bootcamps, which weren’t ideal but remained something. Now apparently they’re broken? Cool.
- When it comes to search, use autocomplete, nothing more.
- What is the tone of a font? What does it say to us? This deep dive goes hard on what fonts can – and can’t – say.
- This week on Baymard: intermediary category pages considered harmful on DTC stores. Saying what we were all thinking, once again!
